If you are building a home extension for your Perth home, the choice of flooring is an important but often overlooked factor. Here is a guide to flooring.
Timber
Timber flooring has become the flooring of choice for many Perth residents. For those with backyards that have a lot of bushes or trees, timber helps the home blend into nature. If you are building a recreation room that transitions into an alfresco living area, timber is a very nice touch.
But it is expensive. If your original home has a timber floor, we encourage you to match it if possible. But if you are working on a budget and don’t want to do timber, there are plenty of other alternatives.
Bamboo
Bamboo isn’t officially wood, but it has a lot of the same strong points as a flooring material. Bamboo is environmentally friendly because it reaches maturity quickly and regenerates itself much like a weed, requiring no replanting. It’s strong and looks like timber but at a fraction of the cost.
Laminate
A laminate floor has a timber-like appearance but is a lot less expensive and a lot easier to install and maintain.
Concrete
This won’t work in many homes because of its industrial “vibe,” but it is fine for those who want a floor that is very strong, easy to maintain and easy to clean. It is the most durable of flooring surfaces, which is a major consideration for a family. Concrete also looks great in a recreation room.
Carpet
You can control a lot of your home’s appearance with carpet. It also dampens sound by making high frequencies less prevalent, making it great for music and TV rooms. The design options for carpet are nearly infinite. Maintenance is not all that difficult, either.
