How to Make Your Home Accommodate Your Growing Family

Is your family growing as we speak? Are the kids bugging you for a new room of their own? Do you have a new baby on the way?

These are just some of the issues that many families face…

However, you don’t necessarily have to move to a larger house to accommodate your growing family. In fact, you can just simply tweak and spruce up your home, in order to get some extra space.

To make things clearer, let’s look into some of the ways you can make your “home sweet home” equipped and ready for your growing family:

Assess Your Home

Every home has the potential for growth and expansion. It all lies in understanding how your house should look and what adjustments you need to make.

Look around. What specific areas do you think can be utilised for a new room? Do you have any unused spaces in your house, which you think could be appropriately redesigned to create extra space for your new baby or visitors?

By knowing which is which, you’ll be able to come up with the right renovation plan that can help maximise your home’s potential. Accordingly, the next step to take would then be to just implement your plan.

Convert Your Roof

The roof is an aspect of your home that has that “unused potential.” This is where a roof conversion project can play a good part.

If the roof has enough space, you can convert part of it into an attic, which can then serve as storage space for your essentials or as an additional guest room.

Note: homes with older styles, like bungalows, usually have higher roof pitches. Accordingly, this means that they will have more space for renovation and improvements. So, if you’re living in a traditionally-designed home, try to inspect the roofing. You’ll never know, but it just might be the solution you’re looking for.

Attic Conversion

If your home already has an existing attic, converting it into another room or area can be a good move.

Attic conversion means you are converting your attic into a liveable, usable space. And with a few renovations, you can turn it into a new “man cave,” bedroom, storage room or any other room for that matter.

Note: if you don’t have the budget to convert your attic into a guest room, don’t worry. You can just simply install an attic ladder and use your attic to store old furniture, toys, clothes and other items.

Maximise Walls

If roof or attic conversion is not your thing, you can opt to maximise the walls of your home instead.

Does your laundry, basement or garage need to occupy a large space? If not, you can add some new walls or dividers to create a separate room in the area. This will lead to more space for you and your family.

Remember: the key here is to ensure that your house can accommodate more people. And if it means doing some needed adjustments, don’t hesitate to do so. After all, these just might bring more benefits.

Use Space-Saving Techniques

Aside from the strategies mentioned above, you can also opt to make use of some simple space-saving techniques to help you get more out of your home.

Here are some of them:

  • Use the Right Containers and Drawers

– Sometimes, little objects can have a big effect on the efficiency and look of your home. As it is, you can opt to use properly designed containers and drawers to store items and to keep your home clutter-free.

  • Invest in Multi-Functional Furniture

– Furniture can occupy a lot of floor space. However, if you are able to invest in furniture pieces that can be used for more than one purpose, then that can solve the problem.

Examples of this furniture type would be a sofa that can be converted into a bed, beds with “magic” drawers, furniture that can be easily stored when not in use and many other options. If you have a specific feature in mind, you can also opt for customised furniture pieces.

  • Do a General “Clean-Up”

– Chances are you have a lot of items that you don’t really have good use for anymore. So, instead of keeping such items and be forced to build a new storage room for them, why not sell them through a yard sale? This will make things more economical for you and you get to earn some additional money as well.
