It seems like more and more people are seeing the wisdom of updating and expanding their current homes instead of buying, selling and moving.
Recently, realestate.com.au released their latest Consumer Intentions Study. They surveyed 1534 people over a 30 day period in 2016 about buying, selling and renovating. Here’s what they had to say about home renovations.
7% of those surveyed said the plan to renovate their current properties. 17% plan to do all of the work themselves. 32% plan on doing most of the work themselves while 29% plan to do part of the work.
Kitchens and bathrooms are at the top of the list, with 22% planning to renovate their kitchens and 21% planning to renovate their bathrooms. Since these are the renovations which are known to increase demand and therefore value when a house is on the market, that is not surprising. But DIY home renovators should be careful and make sure they are able to do the renovations in a way that it actually enhances their homes.
DIY renovations can sometimes entail more work than they appear on the surface. If they are done well, they can increase the aesthetic value and market value of your home. But if they don’t, you can end up with a home renovation disaster.
When the respondents were asked about budgeting their home renovations, 28% said they don’t know how much they will spend, while 17% set budgets from $20,000 to $50,000.
