If you are thinking about a home extension for your Perth area home, you are not alone. We have provided hundreds of them in more than 70 years of combined home renovation experience in the Perth market. Sadly, some of our projects have been demolitions and rebuilds of DIY projects that didn’t work out.
If you are thinking of going the DIY route, here are some things to consider. We are going to give you what we feel is an objective look at the advantages and disadvantages of doing it yourself.
Doing it Yourself
The biggest benefit of doing it yourself is that you save a lot of money. If you have friends and family who can pitch in and you are all talented enough to do a professional job, it is a great way to go. However, there are plenty of pitfalls along the way.
First, you need to go and get all of your permits. You will have to provide rough plans showing what you intend to do. You will need to familiarise yourself with all council building regulations. You may have community regulations and all homes will be subject to the Building Code of Australia. You also need to know where you are allowed to dig when you need to lay plumbing pipes.
When you buy building materials, you are going to be charged full retail rate. This can take a huge bite out of the money you save on labour. It is also going to take longer for you to build because you won’t have as large a crew and won’t be working five full days a week.
When doing the electrical and plumbing, you have to make sure it is up to code. This usually requires a professional. If you are lucky, one of your friends or family is qualified.
