Alleged Home Renovation Scam
Earlier this year, five Irish nationals were arrested because they were part of a home renovation scam in the Perth area. The five, all male, were arrested in a Hazelmere trailer park. This gang preyed upon mostly elderly people, offering to do home renovations, collecting as much money as they could up front and leaving the work undone or terribly done.
An 18-year-old was charged with one count each of unlawful possession and criminal damage, along with two counts each of stealing and gaining benefit by fraud.
A 19-year-old was charged with one count of unlawful possession, two counts each of attempting to gain benefit by fraud and gaining benefit by fraud and three counts each of stealing, criminal damage and trespassing.
A 23-year-old was charged with one count each of criminal damage, unlawful possession and gaining benefit by fraud.
A 33-year-old was charged with one count of unlawful possession.
A 42-year-old was charged with one count of stealing and two counts of stealing.
Don’t Fall For Scams
A lot of people lost a lot of money here, all for the “crime” of wanting to make their home a better place to live. Our hearts go out to them. So, how can you prevent yourself from falling prey to home renovation scams?
Always hire a licensed builder. Check the license with the state. Always make sure that your builder has references. Except in rare cases, you want a builder who has been in business for a long time, too.
