When a homeowner is considering a home extension or renovation for a Perth property, cost is more often than not a major consideration. After all, besides avoiding the hassle of selling, buying and moving, the reduced cost of a home extension or renovation compared to buying a larger home may be the biggest benefit.
Recently, an architect in NSW came up with one of the more creative solutions we have seen to home renovation. The homeowner wanted a home in Redhead, NSW to be renovated for more space, but reducing the carbon footprint. This would mean making it more efficient for heating and cooling. Not only would it reduce the carbon footprint, it would also reduce energy bills while doing so.
The company, Bourne Blue Architecture, came up with a perfect solution for them. They turned what was already in the home into new bedrooms, bathrooms and other living spaces. They then added a new wing, in which they put the kitchen, dining room and living room. This entire wing has glass sliding doors with eco-friendly timber frames.
This allows it to open up into the yard, where the entire wing is transitioned into the surrounding scenery with a timber deck flooring. The cladding is a mix of metal and Australian hardwood. The roof has a system that collects and recycles water. The home also features state of the art insulation and LED lighting. In addition, the design maximises both passive and active heating and cooling.
The interior was redone in natural colours that accent the amount of light that now comes into the home in the daytime due to the sliding glass doors.
