To Build Upwards or Outwards: the Home Extension Dilemma

Apr 29, 2014

Whether you’re building a new home or looking to expand the one that you currently have, which is the more popular option, there is an age old question that you would have to ask yourself: “Should I extend my home upwards or outwards?” Both building on top of the home in the form of a second storey or developing structures on the sides of the home have their respective advantages and you should choose the option that best suits your current needs and situation.

Upward Advantages

Adding a second storey onto your home is a good idea for a number of reasons. If you have older children or many children, it will give each of them more space in the house and a better separation of the living spaces. You can decide on having the master bedroom on the first floor while the kids’ rooms on the second. You can also use the second storey for your entertainment area, hobby room or other extra features that you want.

When it comes to the cost, building upwards is also cheaper. You don’t need to buy roofing materials for the first floor and you don’t need foundation materials for the second storey.

Double storey homes also tend to be worth more in terms of property value. While the price of your home doesn’t drastically rise with a second storey, the boost is significant enough to make a difference if you should decide to move at a later time.

Outward Benefits

If a second storey isn’t in your home vision, there are benefits that you can receive from expanding your home outwards instead. If you have younger children, having a larger house longways would be better because you can more easily keep an eye on them and there is less danger from stairs.

In addition, having an extended back porch area will give you a place to dine outside. This provides a great outdoor environment for eating and enjoying family time together, especially if you invite other relatives and friends to join the party.

Onward and Upward

If you are looking to expand your home to make it look nicer and create more space, then the question you need to answer is whether you want to go outwards or upwards. Both have advantages that may suit your family and both are popular home renovations for many neighbourhoods in the Perth area. Whichever you decide, the expanded space is sure to enhance your home just the way you want it.
