Does Size Matter? How to Utilise Every Square Metre of Your Home

Jun 3, 2016

If you are looking for a larger home, we can provide the home renovation to help you do it. We have helped numerous Perth homeowners add living space to their homes without the hassle of selling, buying and moving.

When we are providing a design consult, one of the first questions that comes up is size. Growing families need more space. But how much space do you really need?

We are experts at ultra-efficient design. If you design efficiently enough, you can have everything you want in a home in less space than you may think. The idea here is to give you exactly what you need without wasting space.

How to Design Efficiently

Remember that every sqm costs you more to build, more to maintain and more to heat and cool. You want enough space to live comfortably but you don’t want your home to look like a gymnasium.

The first thing to do: figure out what you need in your home and the minimum space in which you can have it. It’s OK to add a little space for aesthetics or just to have “breathing room,” but a minimal starting point helps keep you from overbuilding.

Design factors can be huge. Features such as open floor plans and bifold or sliding doors can provide more usable space while providing an appearance of even more space. High-quality materials and features can also lend a “roomy” aesthetic without wasting space. Higher ceilings and clever placement of doors and windows can also make your home feel and look larger than it really is.

However, the most important thing you can do is to insist that every room has a purpose. An “extra room” may sound nice but it’s really a waste of space and building materials.
