Watch Out for DIY Home Renovation Injuries

Aug 22, 2016

DIY home renovation is popular in Perth, as it is across Australia. But lately, there has been a spate of home renovation injuries to amateurs going the DIY route. We recently ran across an article about DIY home renovation injuries in Victoria. We know it’s not Perth but the issues are still the same. Besides, they have great statistics for DIY injuries in Victoria.

DIY Home Renovation Injuries

With so many TV shows like The Block, people tend to think it’s easy to do home renovations. Sadly, it isn’t nearly that easy. If you are a professional or a tradie, you may be able to do a great job renovating your home on your own or with a partner. But the main problem is that most of us aren’t professionals. We are amateurs trying to do the job of a professional.

It’s not a matter of talent or know-how; it’s a matter of experience. Most people work at least 40 hours a week and spend more time going back and forth to work. Add in the unpaid lunch hour and most Australians who commute any distance are spending 50-55 hours a week away from home. That makes us tired, especially if we tend to put in a lot of effort at work.

Most of us can’t realistically expect to spend those 50-55 hours a week away and then put in another 20-25 hours a week renovating our homes.

In Victoria, an average of 1400 people are admitted to hospitals after hurting themselves with tools such as nail guns, chainsaws and other power tools. Some of them lose limbs. In addition, it is easy to slip, fall or run into a stray piece of building material.

Physical labour that keeps someone bent forward all the time can cause numerous back problems. The repetitive motion can cause shoulder problems.
